French booms are the original gilling boom and they are still a good way to make an economic and tangle free flying collar rig.The design allows you to fasten the boom onto the rig line by just twisting the line and allowing the central 'loop' to lock it in place. Most people however prefer to simply tie the main line to the top of the boom and then a weaker length of rotten bottom line between the boom and the sinker.
