Chesil Beach Fishing Guide
Chesil Beach, stretching from Portland to West Bay, is a famous 18-mile shingle beach offering year-round fishing. Key marks include The Cove at the southern end, popular for bass, mackerel, pollack, wrasse, and black bream in summer; Ferry Bridge near the Fleet Lagoon, where bass, mullet, and rays are common; Abbotsbury, ideal for winter cod, whiting, and rays; Cogden, producing plaice, sole, and bass in spring and summer; Hive, good for dab, plaice, whiting, and rays in autumn and winter; West Bexington, offering plaice, sole, bass, and small flatfish; West Bay, with summer mackerel, bass, and pollack; and the Dragon’s Teeth is a mark along Abbotsbury which is about a 30 minute hike to the left of Abbotsbury , where winter cod, whiting, and rays can be caught. The catches are very similar across the marks. The best fishing is on the flood or ebb tide, particularly at dawn, dusk, or night. Bottom rigs are effective for flatfish, cod, whiting, rays, bass, black bream, and small species, while float rigs work well for mackerel, garfish, and mullet. Hard, metal, or soft lures can be used depending on the target species, and fresh bait such as ragworm, lugworm, peeler crab, mussel, or squid improves success. Wear suitable footwear, watch tides, and follow local size and season regulations.
PLEASE CHECK WEATHER AND WINDS BEFORE TRAVELING AS ANY SW WINDS ABOVE 25MPH WITH BIG TIDES CAN MAKE THE BEACH UNSAFE TO FISH.
